Good Timing....

I was not raised in a religious household... my mom says she is an athiest. I was christened Catholic, attended some Baptist Churches when we came South. My mom was very turned off by the Catholic Church, so wouldn't send us to one. Very sparse religious teachings.

So, when I had a child, I didn't pursue it with him... My husband was raised Catholic, sang in the choir, first communion, all that. But wasn't inclined to do the same with his child... not sure why, we never even really have discussed religion. And we have been married almost 20 years.

Our son has recently become interested in the Bible, and why so many people read it. I stayed out of the discussion, but his dad tried explain that even if some one doesn't complete believe in the Bible as the creation (my son is more on the side of science), one can still use it to guide them morally. Makes sense when I hear it, look crazy when I type it.

DS asks to see the Bible, and where would he start reading? DH asks him what he is looking for - specifically to get from the reading.

Just then some one knocks on our door... there are Jehovah Witnesses that walk our neighborhood every few weeks, and DH has had several conversations with them, so they come by to see him... it's not a certain schedule by any means.

Well, it was them.... at first DH was going to send them away, but then he asked if they would help DS with some of the questions he had... DS went outside to talk with them.

We just looked at each other like -- what timing! We were ill equipped to answer the questions in the depth he was searching for, and some one was put on our doorstep that could do it! We were a little weired by it as well.... They talked on the front porch for probably over an hour. DS was pretty pumped when he came back in.... I don't know exactly everything that was discussed, but I know he has an idea that there are other alternatives to solving problems, besides the destructive route he was on.

I just hope the brief experience leaves a lasting impression, and maybe motivates him to continue. DH bought him a bible that is supposed to be easier to understand, figuring if he tries the read the one we have, he will be turned off immediately, because of the language.

What ever the reason those people appeared on our door step... I was extremely grateful.

As an x-Jehovah Witness I have a problem with their doctrine. I was also raised Catholic and after having been involved in many other religions including JW's I usually recommend people stick with the bible alone. There is so much false info out there it's not funny. It's confusing really. They also came to our door when we were searching years ago. I could have written what you just did.

I think your son is onto something as far as studying goes tho, I'm just not advocating the JW's is the place to go. The biggest problem I would have with them especially, besides them having their own bible that doesn't mesh with the original Gk & Hebrew (NWT), is that they do not recognize Christ as God. One guy I talked to actually fell backward when I dared suggest that Jesus was God in the flesh. Even tho I have my issues with the Catholic Church as well......that's one very important thing they have right.

I guess I'd just say, do your HW and start reading the scriptures for yourself. Most people start with the book of John in the scriptures which clearly shows the deity of Christ. I love reading and teaching scripture. There's alot to learn and it's very interesting.
